The Municipal Group of Companies is a large, diversified organization engaged in all major aspects of the heavy civil construction, mining, and environmental services within the Atlantic Provinces. We are currently seeking an Environmental Specialist/Engineer to join our growing Environmental Department based out of either Bedford, NS.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Municipal Group of Companies’ Environmental Manager, the Environmental Specialist (Waste Management) oversees a diverse range of critical environmental components within our waste management facilities. This position ensures meticulous data management, effective coordination, and compliance with regulatory requirements, guidelines, and standards further contributing to our commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible operations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Efficiently manages and organizes lab data and reports, and correspondence ensuring accessible and well-maintained records.
  • Facilitates contracts for sampling programs, ensuring accurate scheduling and execution.
  • Oversees monthly and quarterly sampling programs for multiple waste facilities, ensuring compliance with approval requirements and adherence to timelines.
  • Review monitoring reports, verifying parameters, exceedances, trend development and compliance.
  • Supports proactive communication with Regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with operating Approval conditions.
  • Performs reviews of site operational plans on and facilitates updates as required.
  • Conducts site inspections and manages corrective actions.
  • Coordinates additional site work requirements, such as well repairs, tree trimming, new wells, and erosion and sediment control.
  • Facilitates new approval acquisitions, or amendments/renewals of existing operating approvals as necessary.
  • Investigate new and upcoming technologies applicable to the waste industry.
  • Conducts surface, groundwater or sediment sampling at select locations.
  • Technical review of landfill design and operations.
  • Report, record, and communicate environmental performance indicators to decision makers.
  • Conduct waste audits at landfills and transfer facilities and complete thorough data analysis and make recommendations for decision makers.
  • Coordinates and reviews submittals to regulators, including monitoring reports, corrective action plans, compliance plans, and directive responses.
  • Leads spill response efforts, remediation, and reporting requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience:

  • A degree or diploma from a recognized university or college in Science or Engineering
  • 5 years’ experience in a similar position preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaboration with regulators.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills
  • Self-starter with excellent multitasking abilities.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of waste management systems and landfills within Nova Scotia and/or other Canadian jurisdictions.
  • Experience with waste management or landfill design is considered an asset.
  • Strong time and priority management skills
  • High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning;
  • Ability to respond in pressure situations with a calm demeanor and high sense of urgency.
  • Experience preparing reports and detailed inspection forms;
  • Knowledge of various computer tracking systems such as SharePoint
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Flexibility to travel across the Maritime Provinces when required.
