We are currently seeking the expertise of a Workers’ Compensation Generalist to join our team from our head office based in Bedford, NS.
Job Summary:
The Workers’ Compensation Generalist performs administrative and complex work involved in the management of Workers’ Compensation claims. Work involves considerable interaction with both internal and external contacts, difficult non-routine tasks, and access to confidential information. Judgment and initiative are exercised frequently in response to verbal and written communications and in interpreting and applying company-wide policies and procedures.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Completion and submission of Workers’ Compensation forms
- Maintain records, statistics, prepares reports and make recommendations for improvements
- Participate in the review and evaluation of company policies and procedures with regards to workers’ compensation and return to work
- Make early contact with injured employee/s and provide support and understanding when a workplace injury or illness occurs- this will help maintain a sound relationship between the company and the injured employee
- Maintain communication with supervisors and safety throughout the duration of the claim and in return-to-work planning
- Assist injured employees to remain at, or return to work, as soon and as safely possible after injuries occur
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of rehabilitation and return to work plans for injured employees in collaboration with Workers’ Compensation & Treatment Providers
- Maintain communication with all persons involved in rehabilitation or providing medical services to injured employees (i.e. physiotherapists, occupational therapists, physicians)
- Monitor the progress of an injured employees’ capacity to return to work
- Ensure that injured employees modify their work practices to include regular positional changes, required rest breaks, and other recommendations provided by treatment providers
- Attend off site Case Conferences, job site visits or other meetings as a representative of MGOC
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience:
- College or university diploma or certificate in Disability Management; and three to five years’ experience in a workers’ compensation position; or an equivalent combination sufficient to perform essential functions of this position
- Ability to interpret and apply the relevant Provincial Workers’ Compensation Acts
- Experience working with the Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia
- Understanding of medical terminology
- Familiarity with and ability to interpret Functional Abilities Reports and/or Functional Capacity Evaluations
- Strong management, planning, and leadership skills
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Excellent time management and project management skills
- Able to deal with people tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times

The Workers’ compensation role will include some field work with a wide variety of other job groups where the work environment changes consistently.
